Opening the LibrAfrica library and educational centre thanks to volunteers

Wednesday, 21 August, has been an important date for the Ugandan community of Rugando, with an official opening of the LibrAfrica library and educational centre taking place.

Over six weeks of work of volunteers from the "Science for Development" Foundation in the "Words Make Up the World" project, carried out thanks to the funds from Polish Volunteer Aid, has been crowned by a joint celebration. The task of the Polish Volunteer Aid programme participants was to set up, furnish and manage a school library. The ceremony began with a football match that pitted teachers and volunteers against pupils and ended in a goalless draw. Following the sport display, the hosts and guests moved to the assembly hall at St. Mary's Primary School in Rugando.

There, speeches were given by volunteers Anna Markowska and Mateusz Krawczyk, district authorities, the school's principal Kato Amos and founder Father Charles. The festivities continued with a musical gig, dance show and best poem competition. The spectacle was attended by almost 500 people, including district authorities and guests from other schools in the region. It culminated in unveiling a plaque commemorating the project and touring the library in organized groups. The joy of children, teachers, school management and district authorities from a new place on the Rugando community map knew no bounds. Each speech featured the same words: thank you Poland.

Now, satisfied with the initial effects of their work, the volunteers will train children and teachers on how to use the library properly. Considering the Rugando community involvement, we can already expect that the library and educational centre will be of service to all local children.

The Polish Volunteer Aid 2019 programme is carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
