Young people with the initiative 2 - innovative methods of entrepreneurship education in the Ukrainian educational system

The project’s target country was Ukraine, in particular its western oblasts of Lviv, Rivne, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, and Zakarpattia. Ukraine is facing a number of economic problems: mounting trade deficit, negative industrial output, shrinking foreign-exchange reserves, and the weakening hryvnia. The hostilities and ensuing social and economic hardship plunge Ukrainian society’s economic activity into an ever deeper stagnation. The problem is especially acute in small cities and towns, and in rural areas. The economic situation makes the population palpably poorer and hampers the creation of new companies.

To reverse these worrying tendencies one must primarily focus on the young generation who are coming of age. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s education system has practically nothing to offer young people at school when it comes to effective entrepreneurship education. For this reason, the first group of project beneficiaries were level 1-3 school teachers, and NGO activists working with young people. In the future, they will play a key role in implementing modern instruments of entrepreneurship education. The second group are level 1-3 school students who are involved in the project and test innovative solutions in entrepreneurship education.

The measures followed up on “Youth initiative: a regional training system for entrepreneurship coaches in Ukraine’s education system,” a 2012 Polish aid programme which developed and put in place a pioneering methodology of entrepreneurship education in level 1-3 schools of western Ukraine.

The project comprised two modules (module I ran from 1 March until 31 December 2013, module II from 1 January until 31 December 2014), with the majority of measures carried out in the oblasts of Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk (western Ukraine).

The aim was to develop innovative entrepreneurship education tools for business programmes attended by students of level 1-3 schools. Educational institutions in western Ukraine lack state-of-the-art instruments for teaching entrepreneurship in a way that would make young people more engaged and interested in the ropes of running one’s own business. Once developed for Ukraine’s educational system, such instruments should make classes more effective and attractive for Ukrainian youth.

The principal aim of the project was to implement innovative instruments in teaching entrepreneurship at level 1-3 schools across western Ukraine. The immediate target group were teachers and students at level 1-3 schools in rural areas and small cities and towns of western Ukraine. The project served to implement priority 9, Small and medium-sized enterprises and job creation, as set out in the Multiannual Development Cooperation Programme 2012-2015.

The project developed innovative aids (computer games) for teaching entrepreneurship, and trained entrepreneurship coaches who will be taking these aids to more and more training centres.

Results of stage one of the project included:

- 10 scenarios of elementary games and 5 scenarios of business games for level 1-3 schools. They went on to be developed into computer apps for simulation games.

- methodology for entrepreneurship classes in level 1-3 schools, drawing on innovative educational tools.

In addition, a group of 42 school coaches of entrepreneurship was formed to inculcate in young people creativity, imagination and the entrepreneurial mind-set, to create interpersonal bonds (networks) among economic players, and to build a system of personal incentives to set up one’s own business. The coaches were also trained to be able to use innovative instruments and educational programmes on entrepreneurship.
