Together for Development - Active Global Education in schools (continuation)

In Poland, global education issues have been included in core curricula of all teaching levels since 2009. However, there are still not enough teaching materials and teachers prepared to include the principles of global education in the core curriculum.

The initiative is a direct follow-up to the activities launched in 2013 under the project “Together for Development: Active Global Education at School.” Seventy-two schools from four voivodeships (Lesser Poland, Swietokrzyskie, Greater Poland and Lower Silesian), that is, 316 teachers and 6,430 pupils of different grades, took part in the project.

The project, which will be carried out from 9 May to 31 December 2014, is aimed at promoting global education in schools and local communities by encouraging children, youth and teachers to actively and consciously support global development. It is an attempt to change young Poles’ attitudes to global issues by educating them and changing their way of thinking about lifestyle, culture, and differences and interdependencies between the Global South and the Global North. The project is divided into modules and so it will be continued in 2015.

The project foresees the drafting of a dozen or so workshop plans, as well as the creation of data bases containing teaching and multimedia materials that educators and teachers will be able to use in classes dedicated to global issues. School classes conducted by trained teachers are thus the project’s main activity. The project participants―teachers and pupils of all grades (from kindergarten to high school) from across the country―will also be the project implementers. Apart from classes conducted by the teachers participating in the initiative, educational actions will be organised as part of the Global Education Week and social commitment days.

The project foresees the creation of an awareness-raising platform and tools aimed at motivating Poles to undertake various initiatives and activities within local communities rather than to remain passive.

„Together for Development – Active Global Education for schools” was effected from 9 May to 31 December 2014. It is a module project, started in 2013. Its aim is to promote global education in schools and local communities. Within the scope of the project, a workshop for three people was organized, who then used their newly gained knowledge to create educational materials and to cooperate with schools. Aided by content-related consultants, they made 20 conspectus of educational classes for five age groups.

Eighty-nine schools from 12 provinces participated in the project. It was assumed that 1 000 lessons with created conspectus, would be organized for at least 9 000 students, but due to 21 schools withdrawing from the project, the assumptions were conducted only partially. This situation shows that many Poles still do not know how substantial matter the global education is.

Finally, 698 classes were organized, in which 5 449 students took part. Their aim was to mobilize children, youth and teachers to act towards sustainable development. For the purposes of conducting the classes, 360 sets of educational materials with lesson’s scripts, were distributed in schools.

In November, during Global Education Week, 244 actions on food safety were conducted in Polish schools. All the actions within the framework of project  „Together for Development – Active Global Education for schools”, had reached more than 22 thousand participants of organized events. The lessons have motivated young people to start initiatives on a local level, contributing to improvement of civil society in Poland.
