Supporting the development of girls in Saint Francis Dormitory in Cochabamba, Bolivia - continuation

The project measures are implemented in Bolivia. The region, in which the project is implemented is Cochabamba Department. The community covered by the measures includes 62 pupils from the Internado de Niñas San Francisco in Cochabamba aged 4-22. The come from villages located in the mountain regions and in the Chapare region, i.e. areas exhibiting the highest indicators of poverty, child undernourishment, lack of access to running water and electricity, difficulties in accessing healthcare and education. That community is at risk of social exclusion and the families – of alcoholism and violence.

The objective of the project is to continue the work that was commenced in previous years, in particular in the course of implementation of the project appreciated in the 2013 Polish Aid Contest. The volunteers would like to focus on educational and teaching work by organising workshops and other various forms of activation. The project results will be long-term and they will help the beneficiaries avoid social exclusion. It is assumed that the cooperation between the volunteers and the facility will continue in the upcoming years.

The project is implemented in the period 15 July – 31 December 2014 in Cochabamba in Bolivia. The volunteers will stay in Bolivia between 22 August and 31 December 2014.

Project contractor is the Social Integration Studio BAY OF CULTURES, and the local partner is: St. Francis Dormitory for Girls / Sisters Servants of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesu. Project beneficiaries include a group of 22 pupils of Internado de Niñas San Francisco, who come from the poorest social groups affected by many problems such as: alcoholism, violence, undernourishment, extreme poverty, forced labour, lack of access to education.

Only 3 nuns work in the facility. It is not possible to employ a sufficient number of employees, which makes it difficult to work and take care of the girls – there are only 3 adults for 62 pupils. The main objective of the work performed by the volunteers is to support the partner with their competences and experience in pedagogic and psychological work. The volunteers' tasks include, for example: introducing nutritious diet, purchasing containers for storing food, purchasing hygiene products, underwear, supporting the development of the medical point, preventing and treating childhood diseases, tropical diseases and parasitic diseases, first-aid, purchasing the necessary medication; reducing educational deficits, helping with homework, organising supplementary classes and English classes, holding classes in healthcare education and ecological education (basics of hygiene and prevention) as well as psychological and educational workshops (social skills, human rights), organising group and periodic classes, such as: sports, arts and crafts, cooking, library classes; organising 5 one-day trips; holding workshops on active group work methods and parenting skills for class teachers and RE teachers from the Pius X parish in Cochabamba.

The project contributes to the Millennium Development Goals. It aims at improving the general quality of life of the girls, improving their social and educational opportunities, to reduce the consequences of poverty and undernourishment as well as to realize the development potential of the beneficiaries. The project results will also be beneficial to class teachers and RE teachers from the Pius X parish in Cochabamba as well as children, teenagers and their parents, with whom the teachers work in the parish groups (approx. 1,000 people).
