Support and activation of elderly people from the areas of the Palestinian Authority through workshops and social care in the Elderly Day Care Center and at their homes

The aim of the project was to support and activate elderly persons in the Palestinian Authority. By conducting workshops and classes in the Elderly Day Care Centre, it was possible not only to add variety to the life of seniors, but also give them a chance to know a foreign culture, increase their knowledge and gain new abilities, including the increase of their pro-health awareness. Physical exercises improved their mobility, increased the function of the body and tolerance to physical exercises. By working at patient’s homes, it was possible to provide elderly persons in the most difficult situation with psychical and social support, as well as to organize their leisure time they usually spend alone at home.

In the period from 5 August until 31 December 2015, Caritas Poland in cooperation with Caritas Jerusalem performed a project aimed at supporting elderly persons in the fields of health and mobility, English learning, integration and cultural classes and social assistance in the Palestinian Authority. Place of the project: Ramallah, Jerusalem, localities in the Palestinian Authority and Israel. The project directly covered 85 elderly persons.

The project focused on basic health care in terms of assisting elderly persons. Beneficiaries of the project increased their ability to live healthy, learnt how to communicate in English in basic situations, as well as participated in integration and cultural events that were to integrate elderly persons with the society and let them experience aesthetic features of arts and culture.

The project was performed in the period from 5 August 2015 until 31 December 2015. A female volunteer stayed in the Palestinian Authority in the periods from 8 September 2015 until 6 October 2015 and from 22 November 2015 until 29 December 2015, whereby the break was due to the stay in Poland in the period from 7 October 2015 until 21 November 2015.

In the course of the performance of the project, the following results were achieved:

  • Approx. 55 elderly persons increased their ability to live healthy in the Elderly Day Care Centre in Ramallah.
  • Approx. 55 elderly persons increased their ability to communicate in English in basic situations related to cuisine in the Elderly Day Care Centre in Ramallah.
  • Approx. 55 persons in the Elderly Day Care Centre in Ramallah and approx. 40 persons in Home Notre Dame des Douleurs in Jerusalem could explore aesthetic features of arts and culture.
  • Leisure time activities were organized for a total of 95 persons from the Palestinian Authority.
  • Approx. 40 persons in Home Notre Dame des Douleurs in Jerusalem improved their mobility and communication skills.

The conducted classes enabled to achieve all planned objectives, however, their scope was reduced in some cases. This was due to the fact that the timeframe of the project was reduced due to reasons beyond the control of Caritas Poland.
