In his speech to conclude the first day of the event, European Commission President J.M. Barroso noted that in a rapidly changing reality, the EU must not move away from promoting the principles of social justice. He spoke of a forecast increase of 20% in terms of EU development assistance between 2014 and 2020; funds to support democracy building projects are to go up by 40%.
Summing up the EDD, Commissioner A. Piebalgs emphasized that the issues of democracy, solidarity and the strive for freedom were present in all of the keynote speeches and panel discussions. He reiterated the words of R. Grynspan that democratic ownership of development first and foremost signifies the possibility of choosing the specific path of development.
