Specialist support for the system of substitute care in Georgia

In Georgia there is a need for training specialists in substitute care. The homes for children created with the help of “Polish aid” are places for children who, for various reasons, have had to be away from their families for a certain time. The aim of such homes is to ensure proper care for children in times of family crisis, to restore the capacity of these children to form emotional relationships, including relationships with their relatives, and to reintegrate them with their families. In these homes, children are also taught to be independent.

Specialist support for the system of substitute care in Georgia

The aim of the project is to create a comprehensive system of support for children deprived of contact with their parents and therefore at risk of social marginalisation. The structure of social aid was enhanced through recruitment, topical and specialist training and the employment of 30 carers in the newly established homes for children. Altogether, 17 specialist homes were established to serve as a transitional home for children who had to leave their relatives for various reasons.

The plans included 225 consultations and regular seminars for specialists in the field of foster care, psychologists, consultants, managers of social services, the organisations managing the homes and the partner organisation - Children of Georgia. The activities under the project are intended to lead to the development and implementation of new, unified and quality standards of work and the preparation of competent specialists, which in the future will shorten the duration of children’s stays in children’s homes and will also strengthen the process of family reintegration. There are also plans for promoting independence, which are due to be implemented by 80 wards of children’s homes and intended to prepare young people to lead independent lives. The project is a continuation of earlier aid programmes and a complementary part of the reform of the system of aid for children and families in Georgia implemented by the Georgian government.
