Solar schools in Ukraine

The second edition of the project School of Good Energy in Ukraine has ended in a great success.Beginning from the new school year, vocational colleges in Zbarazh and Kyiv will be offering an experimental course training renewable energy systems master installers and maintenance specialists.

As a result of Ukraine's growing energy prices, there has been an increasing interest in renewable energy sources and demand for specialists in this field. However, the Ukrainian system of vocational education does not keep pace with labour market needs, which shows in the lack of systemic educational solutions with respect to renewable energy sources (RES) at the level of vocational schools. All those needs have now been addressed by a project of the INNOVATIS Foundation. Thanks to financial support from Polish Aid, the vocational colleges in Zbarazh and Kyiv have been provided with opportunities for teaching a new trade, through in-depth training of teachers and equipping school labs called “Solar Schools.” During summer holidays, six Ukrainian teachers underwent a few weeks' course and practice to get prepared for teaching the principal subjects. The renovated rooms now house Ukraine's first renewable energy school labs, equipped with solar system simulators, photovoltaic modules, and computer units with software. Thus furnished labs serve not only a didactic function but also a practical one. Thanks to the commissioned collector system, a school and a boarding house in Zbarazh can now enjoy hot water.

The project outcome will also make it possible to disseminate Polish technology and support Polish RES entrepreneurs on Ukraine's markets. Already during the project implementation phase, the management of the Vocational College in Kyiv signed a contract with Hanplast Sp. z o.o., a Polish producer of photovoltaic panels. The partnership will provide the company with qualified installers acquainted with the state-of-the-art RES technology, at the same time ensuring smooth operation of the school's systems in the long term.

The School of Good Energy project is being implemented by the INNOVATIS Foundation and the Tarnopol Branch of Association of Ukrainian Cities in cooperation with HEWALEX Sp. z o.o., WKM Jacek Wróbel and the Complex of Vocational Education Schools and Training Centres in Bielawa. In 2017-2018, the project received PLN 531,860 in co-financing from the Polish development cooperation budget.
