Descriptions of projects carried out in 2013

61/2013 Increasing the diagnosis efficiency and the treatment of most common surgical and infectious diseases, among them sexually transmitted diseases, through trainings of local health care personnel and equipment of the hospital in Kakooge in Uganda.

Association Polish Medical Mission

The aim of this project is to improve the conditions of medical treatments in the hospital of Kakooge. The surgery room will be rebuilt and equipped in the necessary equipment. In addition, taking into account common breaks in electricity supply, the room will be equipped in a system supporting power supply with emergency power supply adaptors and a power generator. In addition, the medical personnel will be trained in the correct usage of the new medical equipment. The project was granted PLN 247 546.

122/2013 Mbingu na Dunia - Mavuno ya Mvua"- (Heaven and Earth – Water Harvest) comprehensive system of consumption, cleaning and retention of rain and deep-sea water for the didactic-medical institution in Kiabakari.

The project is carried out in an didactic-medical institution attached to the catholic mission in Kiabakari in Tanzania, attended by 40 thousand local inhabitants. A major obstacle in the functioning of the institution was the lack of access to potable water, also for hygienic purposes. The problem was becoming more serious especially during the dry season, forcing the institution staff to bring water from a town 40 km away, which has a negative impact on the effective use of  their working hours.  This problem was addressed in the scope of the project with the construction of a gutter system with facilities cleaning rain water and new retention containers (3 concrete and 10 plastic), as well as a stand by deep water well. The construction of the system will ensure sufficient water supply for the functioning of the institution. In addition, excess water could be distributed to the local community. The project was granted PLN 404 100.

124/2013 „Mbegu Njema"(Good Grain) – Modern kindergarten in Kiabakari a chance for proper development and education of the youngest in the rural region of the Mara region. Adaptation, expansion and equipment of the existing infrastructure for kindergarten purposes.

Kiabakari Foundation

The aim of this project is to increase the level of kindergarten education and the access to it through the expansion of the Maria Teresa Ledóchowska kindergarten building in Tanzania. At present, the kindergarten attended by 120 children is located in the parish house adjacent to the Kiabakari mission, which does not have appropriate rooms. The parish house will be adapted to the needs of the kindergarten and enlarged with one room, dining area, kitchen as well as farming and sanitary facilities. Educational materials will also be provided. The project was granted PLN 451 350.

125/2013  „Upendo Unaojali"(Caring Love) – broadening of the pre- and post-natal care with the development of the possibility to hospitalise patients in the Kiabakari health centre.

Fundacja Kiabakari

This project aims at enlarging the Kiabakari health centre, which was built in 2007 thanks to the donation granted by the MFA of the Republic of Poland. In the scope of a project carried out by the Embassy of Poland in Nairobi, a delivery ward has been set up in the health centre in 2007 and necessary equipment provided. Unfortunately, due to a high number of premature births connected with the poor health of women, existing illnesses and lack of professional care over pregnant women, it was necessary to create an infant intensive care ward. In the scope of the project, also a gynaecological surgery and a post-birth room were opened. In order to provide patients in the centre with comprehensive health care, the place will be enlarged with two additional buildings with two hospital rooms for adults and children each. The expansion of the hospital will provide the newborn, mothers and other inhabitants of Kiabakari and nearby villages with comprehensive medical care. The project was granted PLN 526 650.

344/2013 UBUZIMA BWIZA II – improvement of sanitary conditions for HIV/Aids affected people

Christian Charity Service

The project is carried out in Kayonza, one of the poorest districts of eastern Rwanda. It is aimed at people affected by HIV/Aids, as they are especially prone to get infected with so called diseases of dirty hands. Those people, often deprived of income, living in isolation and often socially stigmatised, do not possess the means to equip their farms in sanitary facilities, which causes their health situation to deteriorate. Addressing those needs, toilets and tippy-taps were built in 530 households. In addition, 13 health committees will be created near the communes, promoting hygiene and the maintenance of the sanitary facilities. 26 committee members will take part in a training on hygiene and key sanitary issues and the acquired information will be disseminated in the communities. The project was granted PLN 293 660.

409/2013 Books for peace and development – library modernisation and activation of volunteers and teachers to create a social library as a place for civic initiatives in slums of Nairobi

Alliance of Associations Polish Green Network

The project will be carried out in the Kibera slum – one of the biggest and poorest districts of Nairobi. The social organisation Amani Kibera, which has set up the Resource Centre in the slum, will be the project partner. It is not only a library, but also a meeting place for youth and children and a occupational development centre for groups endangered with social exclusion. The project activities include the renovation and enlargement of the library rooms, the purchase of furniture and books, and the assembly of photovoltaic cells, thanks to which the library will have an unlimited access to energy and the Internet. In addition, 3 courses in information technology and 3 courses in civic eduation and global education for teachers from nearby schools and for library volunteers will be conducted. Volunteers will take part in activating workshops and will work on a library development plan, including constant cooperation with discussion groups, and on the choice of regular workshops for children, youth and adults. The project was granted PLN 220 803.
