Polish-Swiss development cooperation discussed in Bern

Development activities in the Eastern Partnership (EP) countries, democracy support and the future shape of development cooperation after 2015 were the main topics of Polish-Swiss talks between the undersecretary of state Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz and Ambassador Martin Dahinden, the General Director of the Swiss Development Cooperation.

Subjects covered during the consultations included possible areas of cooperation between Poland and Switzerland in providing aid to Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan. In the context of the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius, special attention was paid to the support of transformation efforts in the EP countries.

During the review of the Polish and Swiss development cooperation programmes, several matching priorities were discovered, among them the support and promotion of democracy as an important element of development and actions for the amelioration of living conditions (e.g. access to potable water) for local inhabitants in Central Asian countries (Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan).

The European Endowment for Democracy (EED) and development agendas after 2015 were some of other topics raised during the consultations.

At the end of the meeting, Minister Pełczyńska-Nałęcz has added that she hopes to continue the dialogue on the shape of development cooperation after 2015, both in bilateral contacts and on the international forum in the UN and DAC OECD, which Poland has joined the preceding day.
