Medical and educational support for Holy Spirit Clinic in Maggotty in Jamaica
The project was implemented between 1 July and 31 December 2011 in Maggotty (Jamaica) and counted with participation of Polish volunteers who stayed there throughout its duration. The coordinator of the project was the Foundation of Humanitarian Aid "Redemptoris Missio", and the local partner was the Holy Spirit Clinic.
The aim of the project was to provide medical help in the Holy Spirit Clinic and in surrounding villages, by preventive medical actions aimed at children and adults, medical care and educational activities.
The main aims of the project were medical tests, diagnosis and treatment plans, distribution of medicines, minor surgical procedures and work in the walk-in clinic. These activities took place in the clinic and during the home visits in the surrounding villages and at the nursing home. Moreover, the volunteers carried out educational activities focused on raising awareness about health issues and by that improving the residents’ lifestyles. Apart from everyday medical advices given during appointments, the volunteers organised one educational seminar.
During the project, the volunteers worked 5-6 days a week, 9-10 hours per day, and they attended a total of 5150 patients. 320 patients per week were provided a permanent access to medical care. Additionally, home visits were given to an average of 100 patients and 50 residents of the nursing home per week. The educational activities were directed at approx. 80 people a month.
