"Maths for life" - the education of teachers and students in BUGISI MISION in Tanzania, the III edition

The project was implemented between 18 June and 31 December 2012 in Didia (region Shinyanga)  in Tanzania, and counted with participation of one volunteer who stayed there from 18 June to 31 December. The coordinator of the project was the Society of African Missions, Charity and Voluntary Centre "SOLIDARNI" Foundation Hear Africa, and the local partner was the Bugisi Mission, SMA.

The aim of the project was to teach maths to children and adolescents living in the area, and to increase by 50% the number of students of 6th grade who will sit the state exam. It also aimed at improving the results of teaching maths in the Don Bosco school.

The volunteer conducted a preparatory course for students of last grade, helping them to prepare for the exam. Over four months, the volunteer taught maths to students of last grade (77 people) and 3rd grade (98 people). She also organised afternoon classes in small groups, that were designed to help weaker students and practice acquired skills. On Saturdays, the volunteer carried out additional classes for all students of the 3rd grade, aiming at catching up with the maths programme.

Another component of the project was organising two sessions of workshops for female students from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade, aiming at strengthening their self-esteem, and discussing women’s dignity and their role in the African society, and their relations with men. In total, 88 participants attended the workshops. Thanks to those meetings, girls from the Don Bosco school became more confident.

As a result, the volunteer prepared 77 final grade students for the exam. She conducted a total of 30 classes of preparatory course, and 22 mock exams. In total, she carried out 192 day classes, 16 evening classes and 15 Saturday classes. The project activities contributed noticeably to increasing the number of students passing the state math exam.

As part of the global education initiative, the volunteer prepared an exhibition “Maths for life”, showing life and educational activities in Bugisi Mission, that encouraged to participate in development activities and volunteering. A flyer providing additional information about the project was prepared as well.
