Magical ball, magical Africa - football unites us!

The main objective of the project inspired by the football championship EURO 2012 and implemented by the Economical Foundation Poland – East Africa in cooperation with the Polish Football Association (PZPN) and the website AfrykaGola.pl between 15th May and 31st December 2012, was to popularise knowledge about Africa among children. Male and female players of African origin who play in Polish clubs talked about their home countries and African culture during the meetings with young football fans.

Football Academy workshop in Kluczbork was also organised in cooperation with PZPN. There, the children we able to talk to the African football players, collect their autographs and play with them. A special educational brochure “Africa – children’s questions and not always easy answers” was prepared for the workshops.

The summary of the project was a calendar for 2013, where along with photographs, colourful graphics and stories of the project’s protagonists, some essential information was presented in an accessible manner. The calendar was distributed during the finals of children’s football tournaments organised by the Polish Football Association, among others: “From the backyard to the stadiums” (14-16 September, Ostróda), Marek Wielgus Tournament (21-23 September, Wrocław), Grand Football Festival (15 October, Lublin). In a contest “Become an expert on Africa” 100 people participated. Official raffle was organised in the headquarters of the Polish Football Association on 20 December 2012, and then the prizes were sent to the winners (original t-shirts of the African selections, footballs, t-shirts with the logo of UEFA Grassroots and copies of the Michał Zichlarz’s book “Afryka Gola”).

In the actions addressed directly to the youth, 2,500 children participated. Thanks to a big interest of the media, the project reached a much larger audience.
