Good beginning: Equality of educational opportunity for children and youth in Butiama

Project activities were carried out in Butiama in Mara region in northeast part of Tanzania.

The biggest problems that local community of Butiama have to face are: high percentage of HIV/AIDS infections (over 25%), low level of education, high unemployment, and lack of perspectives for a decent life. Many children do not attend school at all.

The result of low level of education and lack of cultural offers for spending one’s free time is a risk of social exclusion. Our Lady of Precious Blood of Jesus parish responded to that risk by leading an out-of-school common room for children and youths from the neighbourhood. This place is their chance for after dark learning, getting help with their homework and creative development.

The participants of the project activities were children and youths attending classes in the common room, teachers from primary schools and high schools in Butiama, and local leaders of the children and youth groups.
