The European Year for Development (EYD), established by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, is drawing to an end. On 9 December 2015, the closing ceremony was held in Luxembourg, which presided over the Council in the second half of 2015. The official event was preceded by a Kapuscinski Development Lecture, the last one in this year’s series, titled “From war to development – Women leading the nation”, given by Leymah Gbowee, Peace Nobel Prize laureate in 2011.
Representatives of governments and institutions from Member States, involved in implementing the events related to the EYD in individual countries, were invited to the ceremony held at the Luxembourg Opera. The following persons presented their speeches during the event: Xavier Bettel, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Neven Mimica, European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Linda McAan, Chair of the European Parliament Committee on Development, and Marius Wanders, EYD Ambassador, Civil Society Alliance.
During the gala, a Joint declaration of the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission titled “Legacy of theEuropean Year for Development 2015”, was signed in the presence of Henri, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, by Neven Mimica, European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Linda McAan, Chair of the European Parliament Committee on Development, and Romain Schneider, Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Luxembourg Presidency of the Council.
