Voluntary service – running Salesian Home for Street Boys in Sunyani (Ghana) - continuation

In the time period between July 1st and December 31st 2010 Salesian Missionary Voluntary Service - Youth For The World in cooperation with Don Bosco Vocational – Technical Institute executed a project in which two volunteers worked for the benefit of healthy development of pupils of Home for the Children of the Street in Sunyani in Ghana. The volunteers worked with a group of 30 pupils of the Home and 25 children attending extracurricular activities. Indirectly, their work had an impact on all of approximately 80 000 inhabitants of the town Sunyani.

The duties of the volunteers participating in the project were taking general educational care, accompanying the educational development, conducting extra-curricular and compensatory activities, as well as sports classes. The volunteers also prepared a special education programme concerning children’s rights and media education associated with them, which ended in an exhibition.

The objective of the project was primarily to improve the situation of young inhabitants of the institution and to restore them to life in society. Its’ essence was to allow the integral development of the facility pupils – beneficiaries are boys who often have not experienced enough love in the family to be able to healthily develop and function in the society. The basis of the project was the assumption that, especially at that stage of development, it is necessary to foster a set of conditions, which in a healthy social situation a young men would receive in the family home. Another aim was to present to the boys the possibility of working in a decent job and ensuring access to education. Moreover, the aim of the project was to increase the knowledge of the pupils of the Home about their rights and opportunities of access to education – volunteers conducted a series of workshops to increase the awareness of pupils of children’s right. Innovative and non-formal workshops methods, using art as a medium, allowed for an easy assimilation of useful knowledge.

As a part of education initiative a publication was created – a wall calendar for year 2011 entitled “Children’s right in the lens” containing the outlines of educational activities for children’s rights. It has been decided to illustrate each month with a child’s right symbolized by a photograph representing the life of pupils of Don Bosco Boys Home, or other parts of the city of Sunyani where the volunteers worked. The calendar was printed in 1 000 copies. During a conference for teachers carried out by SWM on November 20th 2010 “Development Education in School” the calendar was presented and handed over to the participants of the meeting.
