Ut'z Bat'z - support for women's cooperatives in Chichicastenango, Guatemala
The project was implemented between June and 31 December 2011 in Chichicastenango (province El Quiché) in Guatemala, and counted with participation of one volunteer who stayed there from 18 July to 31 December 2011. The coordinator of the project was the One World Association, and the local partner was the Foundation En Mi Salsa.
The main aim of the activities was to improve the life situation of beneficiaries of the project: Maya Quiche women and their families, by supporting entrepreneurship, and helping children in the most difficult situation.
The volunteer carried out 106 hours of individual meetings and trainings, attended by 21 women, and the cooperative Ut’z Bat’z gained 15 new members over the course of the project. As part of the project activities, the volunteer together with the cooperative members prepared a brand strategy based on analysis of the market and competition, improved and developed a website and an on-line store, and created and produced a new product (a board game).
To promote the activities of the cooperative, the volunteer prepared informational materials about fair trade and distributed it among 54 travel agencies and tour guides. She also handed out 1,000 flyers to international tourists in Chichicastenango.
As part of her work with children, the volunteer organised 32 h of creative workshops and extra-curricular activities, attended by 60 participants.
As part of a global education initiative, the volunteer contributed to the publication “Women’s voices: Ghana, Guatemala, Poland” with 5 interviews conducted with women from Guatemala. 500 copies were published, and its electronic version is available on-line (in Polish).
