Tanzania is one of the poorest African countries; in 2006 its GDP per capita was estimated at USD 333 and the average life expectancy at birth is 51 years. Economy is based to a large extent on agriculture which generates 50% of GDP and gives work to over 90% of the manpower in this country. Furthermore, difficult climate conditions limit the acreage of ploughable land to only 4% of the total territory of Tanzania. Another serious problem is a high AIDS mortality rate. It is estimated that until 2010 HIV can cause a reduction in GDP by 15-20% in comparison with the expected values.

Tanzania is very active in the field of poverty reduction, as has been expressed in the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper, called "MKUKUTA" in Swahili. Owing to its implementation, the infant mortality rate has been lowered, and the access to potable water and education improved. Recent reforms of the banking and public sectors have led to faster development of private entrepreneurship and an increase in investment level. Tanzania has at its disposal rich gold and natural gas deposits, which, in favourable economic and political conditions (given corruption eradication) can contribute to further economic development of this country.

Internationally Tanzania is positively evaluated as to its democratic standards and good governance.

Polish development assistance initiatives carried out in Tanzania include:

  • health protection (combating HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and fistula)
  • agriculture;
  • access to potable water;
  • education.

Poland is also engaged in providing food aid to Tanzania. In 2006, USD 200 thousand was allotted to this purpose. A long-term development assistance programme planned for the years 2007-2010 is financed with the funds administered by the World Food Programme.

In 2008, PLN 2 million was allocated for the development assistance provided to Tanzania.
