The location of TEHAMA project was the town of Moshi, situated at the slopes of Africa's highest mountain and major attraction - Mount Kilimanjaro. About 1,000 teachers were employed at the public schools of Moshi District, of whom only few had the knowledge and skills to conduct the computer classes. Children and young people did not have the opportunity to learn modern technologies and thus were destined for an inferior position on the labour market. As part of the project, renovation was undertaken and two rooms were equipped in the local teacher training centre - the Mawenzi Teachers' Resource Centre (TRC). Computers were purchased, installed and connected to the internet. Moreover, a multimedia overhead projector was purchased. Rental of the projector will constitute an additional income for the centre after the project is completed. The most important component of the project was a series of IT training courses, directed to teachers, officials and youth (a total of 144 people). Twelve public schools, of which principals and teachers were already trained within the TEHAMA project, were equipped with computers, purchased with budget savings. Thanks to the equipment, teachers will be able to use the acquired knowledge on the daily basis without travelling to the centre of Moshi where TRC is located. The last element of the project was to carry out additional training on creation and management of web pages. The course was conducted by a Polish volunteer and subsequently the TRC website was created by the trained TRC workers: http://www.mawensitrc.org/. |
