Support for infrastructure of the Peace Oasis in Za'atari Camp

Children and teenagers comprise over 56% of Syrian refugees who reside in the Za'atari Camp, in the vicinity of the city of Mafraq in northern Jordan. Only 55% of them attend school. Hence there is an urgent need to develop facilities which create opportunities for children and teenagers to develop further, also outside the school system. Their participation in classes organised within the framework of Peace Oasis (e.g. a variety of professional courses) prevents them from being excluded from the society as adults. Moreover, the activation of teenagers who had gone through the trauma of war and expulsion will also be of therapeutic value.

Support for infrastructure of the Peace Oasis in Za'atari Camp

The project is expected to be implemented from 11 October to 31 December 2016. Thanks to the cooperation of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Amman and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), portakabins will be purchased and installed and later they will be used in the oasis for children and teenagers operated by LWF.

Poland’s participation in the development of Peace Oasis is part of the aid initiative for Syrian refugees, organized by the V4 countries in cooperation with LWF. As a result of the joint initiative, an additional space will be created in the educational centre, where the poorest children and teenagers from refugee families will be able to participate in developmental and educational activities. The implemented action will help reduce the gap caused by the insufficient number of educational services for children and teenagers staying in the Za'atari camp, who, to a large extent, have no access to education now. The purchased rooms will be used for the above purpose also when the project is formally finished.

LFW has been operating in Jordan since 2012 to increase living standards of both Syrians and Jordanians, who have suffered severely as a result of the ongoing crisis connected with, among others, the war in Syria. Presently, the organisation is providing services, among others, in the Za'atari Camp for Syrian refugees or the so-called local communities hosting refugees, especially in the northern and central part of Jordan (e.g. by providing roofs over their heads, access to water and sanitation, providing material aid, including food, or allowing access to education, psychological assistance or support in terms of social integration).

For the purposes of calculation, the following exchange rate was applied: USD 1 = PLN 4.1749.

The project was being implemented from 10 November to 31 December, 2016. As a result of the joint initiative of the Visegrad Group and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), an additional space was created in the educational centre, where the poorest children and teenagers from refugee families would be able to participate in developmental and educational activities. The implemented action will help reduce the gap caused by the insufficient number of educational services for children and teenagers staying in the Za’atari camp, who, to a large extent, have no access to education now. LWF, following the instructions of the Embassy, purchased 3 portakabins.

The value of the donation amounted to EUR 20,000, which covered the entire cost of the project.
