Many children live on the streets of Lima and a significant number of city residents live in extreme poverty. An additional problem of the latter group is the lack of identity documents which ensure access to basic social services such as education and health care. The project implemented by the Polish Embassy, in co-operation with the Ayllu Situwa Association and the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC) was aimed at the registration of people living on the streets and issuance of identification documents. The project covered six districts of metropolitan Lima. A database of people in need of assistance was established and the required documents were collected. The direct result of the project was issuing identity cards to 472 minors and 130 adult persons. An indirect result of the project was drawing attention to the problem of general discrimination in accessing the basic social services in a large part of the Peruvian society. |
