Restoration of sanitation facilities in "Takovski Ustanak Elementary School in Takovo

The Takovski Ustanak school is situated in the town of Takovo, Moravica District, Gornji Milanovac municipality. The town of Takovo is situated by the regional road, in central Serbia. It came down in the history of Serbia as the location of the Second Serbian Uprising. The municipality is occupied by 44,406 residents. The Gornji Milanovac municipality endeavours to earmark some funds necessary to maintain the facility, however, they are insufficient to renovate it.

Currently, it is necessary to use a water jet in the restrooms to eliminate an unpleasant smell, which is a waste of water resources and the facility budget. The rooms are energy inefficient, due to a poor condition of window frames. There is no access to hot water, soap dispensers or hand dryers in the restrooms and shower rooms, which makes it difficult for students to keep their basic hygiene and exposes them to potential health problems.

Due to these problems, the Takovski Ustanak school cannot fully use its potential of an event centre of the town (historically important to Serbia) when organising, for instance additional activities for students, which restricts access of the students of the school to high-quality education. The beneficiaries of the project will not only be the students, but also their parents, the residents of the village and its vicinity who use the school building to hold events or educational lectures.

The project is scheduled to be implemented from 1 September to 15 December 2016 in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Belgrade and its local partner, the Takovski Ustanak Primary School. The main school and its branches in Gornji Banjani and Boljkovci offer primary education in grades 1-8, branches in Šarani, Gornji Branetići, Vrnčani and Polom have four grades.

The objective of the project is to renovate the restrooms for girls and for boys as well as the storage/shower room. Additionally, there is a plan to solve the problem of water and energy inefficient rooms. The implementation of the project will permanently improve energy efficiency of the rooms and water management of the facility as well as provide students with access to hot water and hygienic products. The project will permanently improve the quality of education by increasing the scope and number of school and extracurricular activities.

One hundred and seventy-seven students from all school branches and local residents who use the building will be the beneficiaries of the project. At the same time, the implementation of the project will increase environmental awareness of the students as well as their understanding of citizenship education.

The value of the project amounted to over PLN 60,000 (EUR 14,590). The donation provided by the Polish Aid amounted to over PLN 57,000 (EUR 13,790). For the purposes of calculation, the following exchange rate was applied: EUR 1 = PLN 4.1749.
