Purchase of equipment for conducting vocational training for women in the Women's Development Center in Irbid

The city of Irbid is located in the northern part of the country, which was most affected by the influx of Syrian refugees. This situation intensifies poverty and has already aggravated the situation in the labour market. The unemployment rate is high among both men and women. Families tend to be big, with many children. The Women's Development Centre is located in the Zabida district, where the abovementioned social groups reside. Women living in the city of Irbid and their families feel an immense need to improve their living conditions, which have an adverse impact on them both in terms of their physical and mental well-being. Women without any education or professional experience have no prospects in the labour market. Acquiring vocational skills, necessary in their environment, will help them generate income and perform work, also in their own houses.

The local partner, the Jordanian National Forum For Women is a women’s organisation bringing together volunteers working to improve the situation of women. It has many years of experience in working for local communities.

The project is scheduled to be implemented from 22 November to 31 December 2016 in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Amman and its local partner, the Jordanian National Forum For Women.

Its objective is to increase the scope of possible actions aimed at improving the economic and social situation of women and their families in the city of Irbid. It will provide the Women's Development Centre in Irbid with the computer, hairstyling, cosmetic procedure and cooking equipment, so that the Centre could conduct workshops for women. The topics of the workshops are adjusted to the situation of women, their effectiveness and various limitations that women have to face in their local community have been taken into consideration. Thus, the foregoing services are performed by women for women or women and men, without the need for a direct, unaccepted contact with the latter. At the same time, when women acquire such skills and generate income from their own work, it enables them to improve their own self-assessment and self-confidence and maybe even take initiative in order to improve their situation. Learning how to operate basic computer programmes also opens up new opportunities, both in terms of communication and the labour market. The additional computer room can be used to teach the English language with multimedia tools.

The residents of the city, who come from impoverished Jordanian and Syrian families, usually the mothers of at least several children, forced to support their unemployed husbands to make a living for their families, are the participants of the workshops.
