Providing warm clothes and boots for civilians in Aleppo

Aleppo has been experiencing the acts of war for five years now. The situation is extremely difficult and unpredictable, thousands of people were forced to leave their houses. The city is divided into three parts: the central districts controlled by the state authorities, the part controlled by radicals of the so-called Islamic State and the third part - controlled by other “democratic” opposition forces.

The civilian population of the city is in a really difficult situation. Since the very beginning of the conflict, the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary have offered comprehensive aid for those who need it, irrespective of their denomination. In winter, the lack of warm clothes and shoes is especially problematic. Thus, providing warmer clothes, pyjamas and shoes sewn in the city would be of enormous help. They would be produced there, upon order. In Aleppo, there are no problems with obtaining fabrics, materials or finding qualified tailors and shoemakers. Thus, the project would also provide employment for local employees and stimulate their own initiative.

The project is scheduled to be implemented from 1 September to 31 December 2016 in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Beirut and its local partner, the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. In its nunnery, the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary run a dormitory for girls, mostly medical students Moreover, educational and recreational meetings, as well as workshops, among others, in tailoring and knitting are organised for teenagers.

The primary objective of the project is to provide warm clothes and shoes for the civilian population of Aleppo by paying local craftsmen to prepare them. It will also stimulate local entrepreneurship.

Nearly 800 internally displaced persons,  including both Christians and Muslims (mostly Sunni), entire families at a different age (children will be given priority) will be the aid beneficiaries. If needed, the support will also be provided for Syrian and Polish families residing in Aleppo.

The project was implemented from 1 September to 15 November 2016. Its purpose was to provide those who need help in Aleppo with warm clothes during winter and offer local craftsmen, who made the clothes, income opportunities. The clothes were given to 250 families (in total approximately 800 persons). The clothes were sewn in 8 local tailors’ workshops in Aleppo. The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary distributed the clothes

in the nunnery in Aleppo. They decided not to purchase shoes, as their sizes could have been wrong and the costs could have exceeded the value of the project and reduced the number of beneficiaries.

The project was fully funded by the Polish Aid and its value amounted to approximately PLN 62,000 (USD 15,000). For the purposes of calculation, the following exchange rate was applied: USD 1 = PLN 4.1793.
