Pursuant to the Ordinance of the Council of Ministers of 27 April 2011, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received additional funds - amounting to PLN 1.5.m - from the budget target reserve, which have been allocated towards humanitarian aid for Libya.
Thanks to these funds, Poland's involvement in humanitarian actions aimed at benefiting Libyans - the civilian population suffering under the oppressive Qaddafi regime - increases significantly. From the outset of the conflict, Poland has actively supported humanitarian actions helping people who have been forced to flee Libya, on both the Libyan-Tunisian and Libyan-Egyptian border (e.g. in early March 2011, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland transferred funds amounting to USD 100 000 towards the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR).
The PLN 1.5m funds will be used to support programmes implemented by humanitarian aid organizations - UNHCR and UNICEF - active in Libya in the fields of food and medical aid, as well as civilian protection. The allocation of this sum in the framework of the official appeal launched by the UN will enable proper coordination with other organizations active in Libya and will serve to implement aid projects in accordance with fundamental humanitarian principles (including neutrality and impartiality).
