Furniture for the kindergarten near Luxor

The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary run a kindergarten in the village of Rezegat, 30 km of Luxor. The kindergarten performs an important educational function for Rezegat and the neighbouring villages. Here, both children and parents learn about equality and what it means to respect others regardless of their sex or denomination.

The kindergarten was created in the 1970s, but initially it had a different purpose - it mostly served as a place of providing supplemental nutrition and contact with early education offered by the Sisters from Europe. It was located in an old, primitive building. With time, the number of children grew and the education became more organised. Five years ago, the old building was demolished and the Church built a new one as its parish, with three rooms to be used as classrooms.

The only equipment the kindergarten has comes from the old building and another facility that was closed down at that time. It lacks appropriate equipment for approximately 85-90 children, including chairs, desks, book shelves and computers. Children have been using old damaged furniture which are not adjusted to their age and needs. With new furniture, they will be able to spend their time learning and playing in healthy and comfortable conditions.

The project is scheduled to be implemented from 1 September to 30 December 2016 by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Cairo. Its objective is to equip three rooms in the kindergarten run by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in the village of Rezegat, close to Luxor. In effect, children aged 3 to 5 will receive education in much better conditions for many years to come. It will help to decrease illiteracy among children in this region of Egypt. Moreover, equipping the kindergarten with a computer will help the children get used to modern technologies. The project also provides for purchasing furniture, shipping it and then handing it over in an official manner.

The students of the kindergarten will be the primary beneficiaries of the project - the children from Rezegat and the neighbouring Christian and Muslim villages, which are extremely impoverished. The personnel of the kindergarten and the parents of the children are the indirect beneficiaries.

The project was implemented from 16 October to 10 December 2016. It provided for purchasing furniture and computers, which were then shipped to the kindergarten. Thanks to the project, the children attending the kindergarten are now able to learn and play in considerably improved conditions. The furniture is adjusted to their age and the notebooks purchased allow them to use multimedia programmes for educating children.

The main difficulty hampering the project was the floating Egyptian currency on 3 November, resulting in the exchange rate increasing by over 100%. These sudden changes in prices of goods and services made it impossible to evaluate the project precisely and spend all the funds. With the changing Egyptian pound exchange rate, it was possible to purchase two computers, instead of one.

The project was fully financed from the Polish Aid's funds and its value amounted to approximately PLN 19,000 (approximately USD 4,500). For the purposes of calculation, the following exchange rate was applied: USD 1 = PLN 4.1793.
