E-learning for students in Donbas

For financial or family reasons, teenagers living in Donbass are unable to move for a longer period (e.g. one term) to Mariupol, where a branch of the Donetsk State University of Management is seated. They would have to cover hotel or dorm costs and provide for themselves for several months.

Thus, the Donetsk University decided that their priority task would be to provide young people with a possibility of completing the entire one-year university programme remotely, based on the Internet communication options. Thanks to the project, the youth will be able to begin studies in specialisations taught at the Donetsk University which are of the utmost importance in present-day Ukraine.

The project allowed for the purchase of 30 computers with software and license, which enabled to adjust and implement the “Dean's Office” system. Twenty computers were purchased for the computer room and software components were installed to provide remote learning based on the Moodle platform. It provided access to educational and source materials for each discipline available on the Internet, which students of particular fields of study have to learn. Also, specialised, remote educational courses were prepared in accordance with the academic syllabus of the Donetsk University. Remote courses and modules were also developed for state officials who wanted to raise their qualifications. Five multifunctional pieces of equipment (a printer, a copier, a scanner and a fax machine) and projectors were purchased.

Purchasing the equipment within the framework of the Donetsk University project will make it possible to manage the education process when using the “Dean's Office” system. Thanks to the remote learning system, the University Faculties will be able to conduct lectures, tests and organise on-line seminars and chats with lecturers. Also, an on-line register is maintained to track the students' progress.
